Because it was the final major battle in the War of 1812, actually fought in 1814 shortly after the end of the War had been agreed upon. Realize that communication was slow at the time. The most important aspects about it were (1) that the US forces were vastly outnumbered and their opponent was the same British Army that had just defeated Napoleon Bonaparte; (2) that despite being outnumbered, not only did the US win the battle but did so with remarkably few casualties; (3) it was a war that was essential a failure for the US but thanks to this victory made us seem like a much more powerful nation; and (4) it led to the rise of General Andrew Jackson who would become one of the most powerful Presidents in early American history.
