As a result the colonies had their own armies such as the Queensland Mounted Infantry and the NSW Lancers. But by the end of the Boer War the troops were no longer fighting on behalf of their state but together as Australians. Towards the end of the war, it became deeply unpopular in Australia as many wanted their men to come home and let the British fight for themselves. But public support was still strong for continued involvement with Britain after the war had ended.
