About 750,000 German civilians died from starvation caused by the British blockade during the war.

  • People died (especially children).
  • They starved - including the soldiers who sometimes had to eat horsemeat cooked with nettles.
  • Rations were put in place (some foods were not available).
  • The winter of 1916-17 was called the 'turnip winter' as there was little else to eat.
  • The average diet consisted of only 1,000 calories a day.
  • Malnutrition led to scurvy, tuberculosis, etc.
  • The people were already weakened by hunger when the Spanish influenza epidemic broke out, killing more people than it would have if the people hadn't been starved.
