∙ 8y agoEven though the Soviet Union and the US never actually fought a war against each other, it was called The Cold War because:
- they were not talking to each other; no negotiations
- they both feared the other
- they both could have destroyed the other
- but everyone was too afraid of nuclear war
- Everyone was in a "cold shoulder standoff", just waiting for the other to make a move.
- It was not just a battle of powers, but of national strength and personal egos; but egos could have destroyed the world.
- The Soviets tried to get missiles to Cuba---way too close for comfort.
- Without any warm blood shed, and without a single bomb dropped or a single bullet fired, the US was in a Cold War against a potential threat. But during that time, both countries were on edge, didn't trust each other (still don't), and thought the other side had evil intentions.

There were battles by proxy - the Cuban missile crisis, Vietnam, the space race etc. In the end the philosophy of communism proved to be incompatible with human aspirations and the soviet economy collapsed. From a militaristic viewpoint communism was winning!
