Countries form alliances to further their goals.
Forming an alliance means that a country gets the support of Another Country, or countries, in its international dealings with the rest of the world, whether for trade, diplomacy, or as an advantage in war.
The intricate system of alliances formed across Europe in the years preceding World War 1 was known as the balance of power. It was believed that if a declaration of war against one country meant war against other countries, this would be a sufficient deterrent from aggression.
Countries are like people. They hold different points of views and opinions, different goals and objectives. When two countries can find points of agreement, much like friends do, they can choose to be allies. An ally friendship relies on trust and faith in each other. Friends keep agreements, fight for each other, defend each other. Yet, even allies can have disagreements among things they agree upon. So keeping allies happy is important in continuing negotiations. Talking things out before problems occur is vital.
