Slaves were steadily liberated by the Union armies as they campaigned in the South. They followed these armies to the Northern camps, where they were employed as labourers, and a few joined black regiments from the North.
African-Americans joined many Union regiments at the beginning of the war. In 1863, a large number of African American regiments were formed using primarily escaped slaves as foot soldiers. Most of their officers were white, because few blacks had the required education at that time.

It all depends on what you define as trained. Maybe it could learn a few new behaviors, but it could never be trained to be tame.

Most nobles were trained to be knights in much of the Middle Ages. There were a few who were not, and Peter Abelard is a well known exception.
