lots of planes in the military can break the sound barrier now. there are different catagories though. the are aircrafts that have to be droped from a large cargo plane. the fastest of these are the X-43A with 7,546 mph. then there is the space shuttle with 15,000 mph. But a regular aircraft would be the SR-71 Blackbird with 2,293 mph. Hope this helps
