There were 22 different basic 'marks' of Spitfire and each had many variations. Then there were also Spiteful's, Seafires and Seafangs, the naval versions. The Merlin engine which powered most Spitfires had over 60 variants. It was in constant development throughout the war. Near the end of WW2, a new Rolls Royce engine, the Griffon was used in some late model Spitfires. -Propellers were also in constant development and Spitfires could be seen with 3, 4 or 5 blade propellers.
