Guns and tanks
The Germans had approximately 700 tanks, within reach of the D Day beaches. However, most of these tanks were under Hitler's direct control and he refused to release them until mid-afternoon on the 6th. By this time the Allies had landed over 300 tanks and many vehicles and the arriving German tanks did not engage until the next day.
The Canadians concentrated on getting tanks ashore as early as possible. the British were not far behind. Together the Canadians and British landed over 900 tanks on the first day. -I am not certain about American tank numbers, but do know that many of their DD tanks sank far off the beaches through being launched early, or were blown up on Omaha Beach. We only hear of a few American tank engagements on the first day or two, so I believe their tanks came mainly after the 6 th.

On the landing beaches themselves, the Germans had the 352nd, 709th, 91st, 243rd, and 716th infantry Divisions and many coastal artillery units. The 21st Panzer and12th SS Panzer Divisions were nearby.

The naval forces on D Day had over 11,000 ships and boats involved. There were over 4,000 air missions on D Day by the allied forces. The Allies landed over 10,000 tanks, cars, and trucks on D Day.
DD tanks (for Duplex Drive, but nicknamed Donald Duck tanks) were amphibious swimming tanks developed during the Second World War. The phrase is mostly used for the M4 Sherman medium tanks used by the Allies in the opening phases of the D-Day landings in 1944. Source: wikipedia
