Back during the cold war a plane was shot down over the Soviet Union while exicuting a recon mission. The United States set out on what is know as a "black project" for the purpose of accomplishing one task: to build a plane that could fly so fast it was virtually impossible to shoot down. The ending result: the SR-71 "Blackbird". The plane could out run missles and flew so high bullets couldn't reach it. Ontop of that, the planes stealth design gave it a minimal radar cross section, helping aviod it getting shot at in the first place. An SR-71 has never been lost in combat, and the only damage one has ever taken was when it was flying low and a bullet intended for another plane grazed it's wing.
