There are three kinds of fiberboard--low-density, medium-density and high-density. All three are made by mixing powdered wood fiber and adhesive, then pressing them in a hydraulic press. Low-density fiberboard is made by compressing a foot-thick pile of fiber to 1/2" thickness. Medium-density fiberboard compresses a foot of fiber to 1/4" thickness, and high-density fiberboard compresses a foot of fiber to 1/8" thickness. Low-density fiberboard is usually coated with asphalt on one side and used as cheap sheathing under siding on houses. Medium-density fiberboard is used for a multitude of purposes, and high-density fiberboard is used for laminate flooring.
Well one of them is kind of dense while the other one is not really dense at all.

it stands for Medium Density Fiberboard
Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is a versatile material used in furniture manufacturing due to its affordability, durability, and smooth surface for painting or veneering. It is also eco-friendly as it is made from recycled wood fibers and does not contain knots or grain patterns, resulting in a consistent finish. Additionally, MDF is easy to work with and can be shaped into intricate designs, making it a popular choice for furniture makers.
Fiberboard is an engineered wood product made from wood fibers, often produced from recycled wood or wood byproducts. It is created through processes that involve breaking down wood into fibers and then binding them together with adhesives or heat and pressure. Fiberboard is commonly used in furniture, cabinetry, and construction due to its versatility, affordability, and ease of fabrication. Its density can vary, leading to different types such as medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and high-density fiberboard (HDF), each suited for specific applications.
