High pressure CO2 systems has bottles divided into groups, and the maintenance mostly consist of disconnecting the bottles from the groups and weighing them to check if they still contain the same amount. If not then they have a leak and must be repaired and refilled. In older days the check was done with a radioactive substance and a Geiger counter which got moved up and down on the bottle and a pointer on the counter would show the level surface by moving back and forth.

the temperature and level would then be marked on the bottle and compared with the next measurement.

If the next measuement was lower level with the same temperature you would have a leak.

Your can also use ultrasound and measure the level the same way.
