Buy them individually. There are plenty of places where you can buy individual sockets. Sears, Ace Hardware, and other hardware stores, for one. Where to go depends on what quality of tools you buy... if you typically buy your tools from Harbor Freight, you wouldn't want to spend the money you would on a Snap-On truck.

Wrenches or spanners are most useful. Sockets are very useful in many cases. I keep complete sets of both SAE and Metric wrenches in my car. along with Allen wrenches of both types. You will need a set of SAE or standard wrenches and SAE sockets and some muscle.

Some tools can be both power and automotive tools. But generally automotive tools are wrenches, sockets, drivers etc whereas power tools are electric saws, drills, etc.
With a lot of care coupled with swearing, throwing wrenches, kicking things and some knowledge.
Generally you will need basic metric wrenches, and metric sockets and possibly a torx head socket on some models. Also jackstands and hydraulic jack.
