You can typically cut into a TJI (Truss Joist I-beam) joist up to one-third of its depth without compromising its structural integrity. For example, if you have a 10-inch deep TJI joist, you should avoid cutting more than about 3 inches deep. Always refer to the manufacturer's guidelines and consult a structural engineer before making any modifications, as specific joist models may have different requirements.

Can you use tji for rim joist?

Yes, TJI (Trus Joist I-Beams) can be used for rim joists, as they provide strength and stability while minimizing weight. When using TJI for rim joists, it's important to ensure proper sizing and spacing according to the structural requirements. Additionally, TJI rim joists can help enhance insulation and air sealing in the building envelope. Always consult local building codes and a structural engineer for specific applications.

How do you fix a cut basement joist?

To fix a cut basement joist, first assess the damage and determine the load it carries. You can reinforce the joist by installing a sister joist—an additional piece of lumber attached alongside the damaged section—using construction adhesive and screws or nails for stability. Ensure the sister joist extends at least 2-3 feet beyond the cut area on both sides for adequate support. If the damage is severe, consult a structural engineer for guidance.

What is the maximum span for a 9 12 microlam used as a floor joist on 16 inch centers?

unless you got a great deal on them, it would never make $$$ sense to use a microlam in lieu of a TJI joist or dimensional lumber. . .microlam is too costly if you have them on hand, I would call the manufacturer. . .they should be able to give you the numbers or send you a book with the span charts

How do you repair a sagging ceiling joist?

There are several ways, but probably the easiest way would be to temporarily buck under the afflicted ceiling joist with a 2x6 temporarily, until the joist is in line with the others. Then go into the attic and cut and attach a 2x6 to the joist and vertically to the roof ridge. Remove the buck. The joist should stay in place.

How do you repair deck joists on a cantilever deck?

Not knowing if the joist are in need of repair from rot (deterioration) or broken/damaged then replace ment of joist may be necessary. First get a replacement joist of the same or better species and treatment content and dimensions as the existing joist. Then cut the joist to the same length. You may have to cut a small angle on the bottom end of the joist to aid in working it over and between the girts and decking boards. Work the joist within a few inches of the joist to be replaced. Use a short 4x4 to drive the joist or a wood block to strike with a hammer. Take a couple of scrap 2x's and temporarily fasten to the girts and new joist to prevent movement. Then you may try a couple methods to remove the old joist. If the decking is fastened with screws then simply backout the screws. If it is nailed, then a 10 lbs. hammer can often remove most anything you need and is a great stress reliever but I recomend you use a reciprocating saw to cut the fasteners between the joist and decking. Usually the vibration of the saw and nails being cut will loosen the deck side of the fasteners and allow you to go top side and pull the old nail halves out. Once the old joist and fasteners are out you can carefully work the new joist in place. I recommend fastening the old decking to the new joist with properly coated screws or a hotdipped galvanized rink shank nail. Repeat joist replacement as necessary on other joist.

What is tgi joist?

TGI is the common name for a TJI, because it rolls of the tongue easier. It is a Truss Joist I-beam. They come in a variety of depths, typically 9-1/2" to 16" and they come in different levels, 100, 200, 300, etc... They consist of a top and bottom cord - which can be 2x3, 2x4, or an equivalent sized engineered wood material depending on the level. And between the top and bottom cord is OSB around 3/8" thick, again depending on the level. They are similar for construction purposes to dimensional lumber (2x10 or equivalent) in that you order up a stack of a certain length and cut them to length as needed. They don't need X bracing but can require extra "squash" blocking under bearing walls. They have small knock-out holes for wiring and can have holes cut through them, based upon certain criteria. For example, a 14" deep TJI can have up to an 8-1/2" hole, in certain locations. Can't do that with a 2x10. Depending on how your floor system is designed, it can be just as rigid as any other floor system. If you go 24" o/c with 3/4" sheeting, most floor systems will give you some bounce. So add a couple of joists and go 19.2" or 16" o/c. The drawback with TJI over dimensional or open web, is the burn-through time. A 2x10 or a 2x4 constructed open web will last longer in a fire than a TJI. Rumors that I've heard say that a fireman will never own a house with TJI's. Supposedly they could burn through and collapse within 5min. But that could always be overcome with a product like No-Burn which reduces the flame spread rating of lumber to make it practically non-combustible.

Why is the joist braced after the notch is cut?

The joist is braced after the notch is cut to maintain structural integrity and prevent sagging or failure. Bracing helps distribute loads evenly and ensures the joist can support its intended weight. Additionally, it minimizes the risk of movement or shifting during construction, which can compromise the overall stability of the framework. Proper bracing is essential for safety and durability in building structures.
