HSS bits are best sharpened using a bench grinder. The trick is to ensure that the back edge is ground a little more than the cutting edge. Ensuring the cutting edge meets the metal rather that the bit riding on the non cutting surface and just polishing the metal. Ensure that both sides are ground evenly and that the original angle of the drill is maintained. Practise on some old bits before sharpening any expensive bits.
Hss drill bits, Titanium coated drill bits and brad point drill bits.
HSS bits, Brad bits and masonry bits.
HSS drill bits are high-speed steel drill bits that are made of a durable steel alloy. They are different from other types of drill bits because they are designed to withstand high temperatures and are able to cut through tough materials like metal and hardwood with ease. Their hardness and heat resistance make them ideal for drilling into hard surfaces.
For both metal and wood projects, the best drill bits are high-speed steel (HSS) or cobalt drill bits. HSS drill bits are versatile and work well on both materials, while cobalt drill bits are more durable and can handle harder metals. It's important to choose the right size and type of drill bit for the specific project to ensure clean and precise drilling.
I have worked with tools over 40 years and never seen an iron drill bit. Most common drill bits are HSS -High Speed Steel.
High Speed Steel aka HSS
For drilling into metal, it is recommended to use a high-speed steel (HSS) drill bit. HSS drill bits are designed to withstand the hardness of metal and provide efficient drilling performance.
HSS drill bits are used in various applications for drilling into metal, wood, plastic, and other materials. They are known for their durability and ability to maintain sharpness, making them suitable for precision drilling tasks in industries such as manufacturing, construction, and automotive.
You use a standard HSS bit for mild steel.
To properly use and maintain a high-speed steel (HSS) drill bit for optimal performance, it is important to use the correct speed and pressure when drilling, lubricate the bit with cutting fluid, and periodically sharpen or replace the bit when it becomes dull. Additionally, store the drill bits in a dry and clean environment to prevent rusting and damage.
An HSS drill bit is a type of drill bit made from high-speed steel, known for its durability and ability to cut through tough materials like metal. It is different from other types of drill bits because of its high heat resistance and hardness, making it suitable for drilling into harder materials without losing its sharpness.
Coated carbide is the best. Uncoated is next.
