Bearing walls (walls that carry a heavy roof or floor load) need studs no more than 16 inches apart.
Non-bearing walls can generally have the studs spaced 24 inches apart.
Standards vary according to location, so it is a good practice to find out what the building codes in your area are.
They should be on 16 inch centers, but may not be even throughout the house. With plaster and lath you don't need to be as accurate with the spacing and sometime windows and door will throw off the spacing. They start over measuring from each opening. My house was built in 1891 and while most of the studs are on 16 inch, they vary from 14 to 20 inches.
most are 24" but in some cases they are 18" if it is a supporting wall or for some other reason thebuilder felt that particular wall needed extra support.
