you can probably only cut off an inch before you hit the hollow part. If you need to cut it shorter, you can if you save the bottom piece and reuse the piece of wood in the bottom. Trim off the ends and the venier cover, glue it, and clamp in over night. You will also have to drill the pivot hole deeper.
