Different rooms require different colors. Don't use bright colors in the bedrooms because it makes it difficult to sleep, and don't use dark colors in offices because you want bright colors to keep attention focused. Also use accessories to accent the rooms.

A child's playhouse is a wonderful place to decorate. Depending on the age of the children, you can often draw from their favourite activities, entertainments and things for inspiration.
My nephew was a very active young man in sports, so we did his playhouse to look like a locker room, with a bench and open spaces for his uniforms (he played several sports). When he got a little older his trophies went into case on the wall with photos of him with his teams.
Once he outgrew the playhouse, his younger sister took it over and turned it into an artist's studio, complete with easels, work table, new lighting and storage for all of her art supplies. The photo/trophy wall became her gallery.
Friends in California asked me to paint the inside of their daughter's playhouse in a princess theme… lots of faux stone walls with faux tapestries, a tromp l'oeil window with a unicorn peeking in and fairies and elves "hiding" on shelves and behind doors. There is no limit to what you can do with a little imagination and a couple of buckets of paint.
