The most basic window coverings are curtains and shades. These options are mostly made from fabric or other fibrous materials and provide privacy and shade without much added insulation. Curtains are most typically hung in pairs around the edges of windows with the ability to be pulled closed as well, while shades are typically one flat panel that can be rolled or pulled to the top of the window. A wide range of colors, textures and materials can be found for these types of coverings.
Somewhat similar to shades are blinds, which are hung from the top of a window and and raised and lowered with a string. Blinds contain separate panels which can often be rotated to allow a desirable amount of sunlight into the wood, but they don't provide the same quality of insulation that some shades and shutters can.
Similar to blinds, shutters also contain adjustable panels called louvers which can either block out the sun entirely or be opened to let sunlight in. Shutters are used both on the exterior and interior of the home, and can either be fixed in place or attached to hinges for a more functional option. Movable louvers are attached to a "tilt rod" which adjusts all of the panels simultaneously.
All of these window covering options have traditional varieties, but all of them are also extremely customizable. When exploring different companies, make sure they have the ability to design and implement anything out-of-the-ordinary that you have in mind.
pros vs cons
Wood shutters can be stained and painted and are a construction material for shutters that has been used for centuries. Polywood are more moisture and impact resistant. However, the polywood is not is strong as wood and may sag if built as a wider panel unless the polywood is reinforced with an inner material like aluminum. Paint does not adhere as well to polywood, so you may have more limited color selection.
