All purifiers on a ship function to clean the oil being used by the ship. There are three main types of purifies, heavy oil, diesel oil, and lubricating oil.
The function of Lock ring or lock nut in the purifier is basically to the parts in the purifier together.As the lock ring is tightened the bowl is compressed ,in turn compressing the disc stack.The disc stack pressure is very important and the lock ring should never be overtightened. The lock ring usually has a left hand thread if the purifier turns clockwise as vice versa to prevent it from slackening during operation.

Basically, a clarifier is attached just after the purifier in the fuel line. While the main function of a purifier is to separate the dissolved water, impurities and sludge from the fuel oil, a clarifier removes any solid foreign material that is not removed from the oil after it passes through the purifier.
