You mix yellow and medium violet (purple) to get brown. I've heard that you also mix blue, white, red and yellow, but it isn't as quick a process.
The yellow shades with the violet, and the violet works as making a shadow to turn the yellow dark.
A good experiment to try: Get good lighting in a room with white or soft pastel colored walls, and create a shadow with an item. You see the shadow will reflect the wall darker.
Imagine the wall as the yellow, and the item as violet. When the two mix, it puts different shades.
