The trestle is the oldest form of table used in Colonial America. The first tables were made of long planks of wood, about two feet wide and twelve feet long, supported by center posts in the middle of the table and at each end. Instead of having a leg at each corner, like most modern tables, the trestle frame was often shaped like upside-down T's, with a long foot at each end to stabilize the table.
