hammer forming is a process by which a form is made from wood, steel, or other hard material and then sheet metal is worked very slowly from all edges until it conforms to the shape of the form. The sheet metal, which is usually 16 gauge or thinner is clamped between the hammer form and a clamp block, and it is very gradually tapped with a dragging motion down over the form. Raw hide mallets, plastic mallets, and wooden and steel "slap hammers" are the tools used in this process. The form it self is very closely cut to the shape of the object that is desired then a radius is cut into the edge of the form with a mill or router depending upon the material the form is made of.
