What is the function of welding mask?

A welding mask is used to protect the face and head from sparks, flying metals and heat. It protects the eyes from dangerous ultraviolet light and infrared light. Without the mask, the cornea of the eye can be severely damaged.

While arc welding, the arc at the end of the electrode can virtually be as bright as the sun. This arc gives off many different forms of intense light including ultraviolet light. This light can 'burn' your eyes giving someone 'welder's flash' or 'arc flash.' It actual kills cells on the surface of your eye, which can be extremely uncomfortable. It's almost feels like you have sand in your eyes.

The dark mask also allows for the welder to actually see the arc and base material to make observations and perform adjustments during the welding process.
