On April 14, 1912, the Titanic sank into the North Atlantic Ocean. A massive iceberg ripped a 300-foot gash in the ship. The damage proved to be too much for the ship, and more than 1,500 people perished in the icy waters of the North Atlantic.

The massive, luxury steamship first made history when it left Southampton, England, bound for New York City on April 10, 1912. The Titanic was about as long as three football fields and one of the largest ships in the world at the time. Not only was the ship colossal, but it was full of impressive features, like a heated pool, tea gardens, elevators, a gymnasium, two libraries, and two barbershops, that first-class passengers could enjoy.

Because of its design and size, the Titanic was thought to be unsinkable. The ship’s design was supposed to be one of the safest at that time. It had sixteen separate chambers that were designed to lock water out in the case of flooding. However, the attitude that the Titanic was unsinkable led to decisions that would prove fatal for passengers and crew. The Titanic only had sixteen lifeboats that could hold about 1,150 people, but there were more than 3,300 people on board. The crew also had little to no emergency training. For example, many of the lifeboats were not even filled with the maximum number of people. The incredible loss of life due to overconfidence and lack of planning made the sinking of the Titanic an unforgettable tragedy.
