Why was the rocket invented?

well it depends on what you mean by "needed". The Rocket, as a tool for both rudimentary aerial and Space Travel and Exploration was developed early in the Ming dynasty by the Chinese, and perfected almost 2000 years later by an American named Dr. Robert Goddard. The rocket has found its most profound use in space travel, and is used primarily because of its ability to provide thrust without atmospheric oxygen. This is what makes rockets differ most profoundly from jet engines, in that the oxygen needed to create and sustain combustion is found in the fuel of the rocket (either solid or liquid, but most often the latter). I think it's 'cause people wanted to see space and in wars they might've wanted to attack form the air.

The above is broadly correct, but they have not mentioned the driving force behind the "space race" of the '60s. This was the Cold War, a unofficial conflict between Russia (The USSR) and the US. Please note that the topic of the Cold War should be further researched if you are doing an in-depth study of space exploration as this played a large part in the development of spacecraft. Rockets are used to launch space craft because they do not require external air. In space, there is no air, so you cannot use a propeller or jet engine. Rockets create force by expelling hot gases in one direction to apply force to the space craft in the opposite direction.
