First start the engine, bring the engine to operating temp. (this brings the oil that has settled into the bottom of the engine case back to the oil tank) Then with the bike held in an upright position, pull the dipstick and check the marks on the dipstick. It is a common mistake to check the oil without starting the engine. if you do not start the engine you will get a false reading and overfill the oil tank.
