Check underneath your left hand side cover. If it is the same as my 750 Shadow it should be underneath that cover.
A water pump circulates the coolant on a 1983 Honda Shadow. But if you are having problems with it circulating you might want to check your thermostat first because it might be stuck , before you start digging into the water pump.

Check wiring, fuse, and all connections. Most likely have to replace the sensor.
