How do you change oil filter on Honda CB 650?

Ah, the CB650! A dream to look at and ride, but a nightmare to source parts for! To change the oil filter, first locate the thing that looks like a small crankcase on the front of the engine, between the downpipes. It should be covered in road-filth, but once that is cleaned off you will notice some heat-sync fins. This is the oil filter cover. Remove it by undoing the bolt that holds it in place (in the centre if memory serves). You should now have access to the oil filter itself. It will no doubt be a hundred years old and will have welded itself to its seat, but after you have cleaned it (and mopped up the gallons of oil that were trapped inside the cover), you should be able to unscrew it using an oil-filter wrench. If no filter-wrench is available, improvise one by swearing a lot then finally taking an old pair of stilsons to it! Oops... you forgot to drain the sump first didn't you! Better screw the filter back on quick & do that now! Clean the filter seat carefully before installing the new filter and make sure all seals are fully in place. You will probably have noticed that the secondary seal that went around the cover is in many small, tatty pieces, so get a new one of those (or make one from an old cereal packet). Refit the cover in the same way you removed it...... ....then keep your eye on the fuel tap and the float valve seats in the (non vacuum) carbs. When petrol is found to be staining your crankcase yellow; scream and run for the hills, then come back and replace the whole bike!
