You need 2.8 liters of engine oil for this with a filter change. Use JAMO MA or MA2 approved motorcycle oil grade 15-40 W. Locate the oil drain bolt under the crankcase and loosen this with a 17mm wrench. Place a pan or something similar under the engine to catch the old oil. Remove oil drain bolt, the oil will come out. Next, remove the outer oil filter cover which is located on the bike's right side on the middle of the crankcase. Note that there are two covers, an outer and an inner one. You remove both with a 4mm Allen wrench. You may have to extend a handle on to the Allen bolts as many types of Allen wrenches are small. When you have removed the outer cover go on to remove the inner one in a similar way. With the inner cover off remove the O-ring and oil filter. check and clean all surfaces for dirt and debris. Replace the filter and assemble in a reverse way. All bolts should be tightened with a torque wrench set at 10Nm (1.0 m-kgf, 7 ft-lb) according to Yamaha. With the filter covers in place fill up with the new oil. Let bike idle for a few minutes and check for leaks.

The oil dipstick on a Yamaha Vstar 650 motorcycle is typically located on the right side of the bike, near the engine. It is usually a long, slender metal rod with a handle on top for easy removal and checking of the oil level. To access the dipstick, you may need to remove any covers or panels that are blocking it. Be sure to consult the owner's manual for specific instructions on locating and checking the oil dipstick on your Vstar 650.
