It may vary by model. My 1998 Sportster had a single oil system with a dry sump and an oil resevoir tank under the right side of the seat. The oil level was checked by a dipstick in the oil filler cap. I would run and stop engine, give it a couple minutes, then check it while standing bike straight up (not leaning on kickstand.)
