To check the transmission fluid level on a 2004 Honda ATV, first ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the engine is off. Locate the transmission dipstick, usually found near the rear of the engine, and remove it to wipe it clean. Reinsert the dipstick without screwing it in, then remove it again to check the fluid level; it should be within the specified range marked on the dipstick. If the level is low, add the appropriate transmission fluid as recommended in the owner’s manual.

On a 400ex the engine and transmission share the same oil. So when you change the oil in the engine you are changing the transmission oil as well. That is why you need an ATV or motorcycle oil designed for wet clutches.
