Remove the spark plug and turn the engine over until the cylinder is in top position. Next remove the valve cover and check the valves, if there is no play in the rocker arms, you might be on the exhaust stroke, then turn the crankshaft 180 degrees, then the engine is on the compression stroke. For adjusting the cam chain, the "T" mark must be lined up with the notch in the peep-hole and the marks on the cam sprocket must flush with the top of the cylinder head. When it is, then the valve timing is correct.
