The solenoid will have two big posts and one or two small posts. Mark and remove the wires from the small posts. If you have one small post you can hook up a jumper wire from the + side of the battery to the small post and it should make the starter crank over. If it has two small posts hook one jumper from the + side of the battery to one of the small posts and another jumper from the - side of the battery to the other small post. If it is OK it will engage the starter. If you get nothing then the solenoid is bad.
If it is a riding mower it may have a blown fuse. They are usually located near the solenoid.
To remove a solenoid from an MTD riding mower, first disconnect the battery to ensure safety. Locate the solenoid, typically near the battery or under the hood, and remove the wiring connections from the terminals, noting their positions for reinstallation. Use a wrench to remove any mounting bolts securing the solenoid to the mower frame, and then carefully lift the solenoid out. Finally, replace it with a new solenoid if necessary, reversing the removal steps.
The solenoid on a riding mower serves as an electromagnetic switch that controls the flow of electrical current to the starter motor. When the ignition key is turned, the solenoid engages, allowing the battery's power to reach the starter, which in turn starts the engine. Additionally, it helps protect the electrical system by preventing excessive current from damaging components. Overall, the solenoid is crucial for the starting process of the mower.
I assume you are talking about the starter solenoid: Follow the positive battery cable from the battery - the other end will be connected to the starter solenoid.

On a riding mower, the solenoid typically has two main terminals: one for the battery and the other for the starter motor. The positive battery cable connects to one terminal, while the cable leading to the starter motor connects to the other terminal. Additionally, the solenoid may have a smaller terminal for the ignition switch or starter switch wire. Always consult your mower's specific wiring diagram for accurate connections.
I assume you mean a starter solenoid. Look at how the old one is hooked up. Put the new one in that way. ...and disconnect the battery first.
Here is a link to a store that sells them. There is a good picture that you can use to identify the solenoid. http://www.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=3160204.
The solenoid on a Craftsman riding mower is typically located near the battery, mounted on or near the frame. It is usually a small cylindrical component with two large terminals for the battery cables and one or more smaller terminals for the ignition switch. To access it, you may need to remove the mower's hood or panels for better visibility. Always ensure the mower is turned off and disconnected from power before attempting any maintenance.
Like any power switch you have Power in, Ground, Switched Power out and the Switch Terminal.
Can I do it myself, set the timing on my riding mower.
