Principally its the same as the old cam / contact breaker system in that at the same point in every revolution a signal is given to deliver the ignition spark at the correct time.
With (contactless) cdi this signal is achieved by a magnet sweeping past a sensor and going via a processor which puts in an adjustment for engine rpm.
The burn time remains the same, so at higher rpm you spark early to peak the pressure at the same point.
With no contacting parts the cdi doesnt go out of adjustment as does the old contact breaker system.
