17.00 HP (12.4 kW)) @ 7500 RPM according to manufacturer specs for 1980
From what I have read in the shop manuals for the 1979 and 1980 Exciters, there was a change between those 2 years where the CDI was not interchangeable due to the timing. So, I'm not sure how well it would run if you used one from a 1978 Exciter in a 1981 Exciter, or if you would eventually burn down the motor. However, if you have installed one, and it is working, then that's great.

Try turning the handlebars all the way to the left or right, this should make the VIN plate more visible. All modernYamaha Motorcycle VIN are a standard 17 characters long. If your Yamaha is pre 1981 it will have a 9-digit VIN.

The compression reading for a 1981 Yamaha YZ 250 motorcycle should typically be in the range of 120 to 150 psi. However, it's important to note that factors such as engine wear and maintenance history can affect these numbers. A reading below 120 psi may indicate a need for engine repair or rebuilding. Always refer to the specific service manual for the most accurate specifications for your bike.
