For a 1988 Sportster 1200cc, you typically need about 1 quart (32 ounces) of primary chain case lubricant. It's essential to ensure that the fluid level is within the recommended range, which is usually checked through the inspection plug. Always refer to the owner's manual for specific guidelines and recommendations for your motorcycle.
28- 32 oz. use 20w50
1 quart of sport lube
remove the derby ( round ) cover from the primary. fill til it tries to run out. replace derby cover.
Your 1976 sportster holds one quart of fluid. I use HD Sportlube or HD PRI ANDTRANS LUBE, but in the olden days I used a 20 wt non detergent motor oil. This fluid lubes the clutches and transmission gears and primary chain.
AnswerMobil1 V-twin 20w-50 in my engine and Mobil1 75w/90 gear oil for the tranny will work fine, or buy the 32 oz's for the tranny at your HD dealer.Don't use trans oil.Sportsters use H.D. primary and transmission lube. You can also use 20/50 H.D. oil. Don't ever run your sportster without transmission oil!
The primary oil does three things. Lube the clutch. Lube the primary chain . And cool the stator. If Harley thought Dextron would do this, they would have recommended the use of it. Keep your Harley a Harley.
To lube the throttle control cable on a 2008 fuel-injected Harley Sportster, first, ensure the bike is turned off and cool. Remove the throttle cable from the throttle grip and the throttle body by loosening the cable adjusters. Use a cable lube tool or a spray lubricant designed for cables, inserting it into the cable housing and applying a light coat. Reinstall the cable, ensuring smooth operation before securing everything back in place.
No, the engine oil and trans oil are not fed from the same tank on H.D. bikes. Engine oil is separate, from the primary drive chain on 4 speed big twins, the transmission oil is also separate. Sportster engines have separate engine oil and their transmissions share primary case oil with the wet clutch. 5 speed models wet clutch models have separate primary case lube, transmission lube and engine oil. As far as my memory serves, no Harley Davidsons have shared engine oil and transmission oil similar to some Jap bikes
I hope you haven't ruined your engine yet. I don't know where the guy above got his info , but it is wrong. Your tranny and primary share a qt of sportlube and your engine has a separate oil tank that holds 3 qts of HD 20-50 motor oil
Look at the low side of the bike (battery side). The large cover on the side of the engine that covers the clutch assembly is the primary cover. It has a smaller circular piece that is held in by two Allen head bolts above the area where the clutch pedal attaches. When this is removed you can check the primary chain tension and put in the clutch lube. If someone has put a chrome cover piece over the primary then you will have to remove this in order to see the inspection cover that I am referring to.
sport lube 1 quart
3 qts 20w50 in the oil tank, about 20 oz in the tranny and 1 qt of primary lube in the primary.
