Depends on engine size. Park on level surface, drain oil, and change filter. Now, Just add enough to reach the full mark and you know the capacity. If it has a filter add to the full mark, start the engine and let run for a couple of minutes, shut down, and wait about 15 minutes. Check the level an add until it is at the full mark. Keep track of the amount of oil you have used and you will then know the capacity. Warning: Do not overfill.
A 17.5 horsepower Murray riding lawnmower should always have 1.5 quarts of oil in it. You may have to add more than that after an oil change because some of the oil will go down into the oil filter.
