If you leave your refrigerator's door open whilst it is switched off, no harm will be done - in fact it is a very good idea to do this as it will help to prevent the mold build-up which can easily happen if it is left closed at normal room temperature with no fresh air circulation.

If you leave your refrigerator's door open whilst it is switched on, the compressor pump will run continuously trying to cool the air in the room whilst at the same time pumping heat out into the same room!

That is not a good idea for at least 3 reasons:

* you will waste electricity 24/7

* the fridge will not cool down enough to protect any food * the compressor and its electric motor will both overheat, which will usually reduce their normal working life from 8 to 10 years to only maybe 1 year or less.

Why pumps not used to pump the gases?

That's not strictly true. Gases are pumped by using pumps such as piston pumps and vane pumps. A garage compressor has the air pumped into the tank by a piston pump. Even a bicycle pump is often used. however, when gases are "pumped" it by definition becomes a compressor. pumps move basically un-compressible fluids. low pressure gas transfer is termed a blower, while higher pressure usage requires a compressor.

What does a compressor do on a car?

An AC compressor compresses the freon and circulates the freon through the system. An air ride compressor pumps compressed air into air bags to level the vehicle and/or alter the handling of the vehicle.

What is the difference between pumps and compressor?

pump is used to move liquid from one point to another, while compressor is used to compress and move gases from point to point.

What is the difference between reciprocating pump and reciprocating compressor?

Though these words may be used interchangeably, there is a difference. A pump is a motor designed to move fluids (whether gas or liquid). A compressor is a kind of pump that has a motor that forces air molecules closer together to pack more matter in a smaller volume. Gases are the only things that are compressable where pumps deal more with liquids (mainly water) although there are air pumps. More.. Pumps are used to move liquids of all kinds not just water. They can be driven by electric motors, steam turbines, wind power etc. Compressors move gasses. We sometimes use what is called a tire pump to inflate bicycle tires but it is actually a hand powered compressor.

Is it possible to cool down a room on a hot summer day by leaving the refrigerator door open?

Assuming I've interpreted your question correctly, the answer is No: A refrigerator is a heat exchanger; it removes heat from the inside and pumps it to the outside -- to plates on the rear of the fridge. If you feel the back of a refrigerator, it will be warm. You may think that if you separated the plates from the "cooling" part of the fridge and put them outside the room, it would cool the room. And in that case, you'd be correct -- that's how air conditioning works.
