My LX 277 did the same thing. I tried new plugs, cleaning the carb, still acted up. Turned out to be a bad ignition coil. Replaced it and it's been running great.

When mine did this, I was able to fix it by fixing the gap of the valve rocker arm, and running high grade 91+ gasoline through it (one tank). Figure out which cylinder is the problem by alternately disconnecting the spark plug wires. The rocker arms are under the aluminum colored cover that has OHV stamped on it. You should use a feeler gauge to check and set the gap. Good luck
