Using it too much or overloading it.
Improvement,
Using the engine too much will certainly not cause over heating. The most likely cause for the over heating is a clogged cooling shroud. Remove the top engine cover that surrounds the flywheel and remove the grass and debris. Mice love to make nests under those engine covers as well.

governor not moving freely or dirty carb
i had high lift blades on my mower & it would overheat. i put regular blades on it & problem went away. could be your problem
Many riding mower don't have oil filters. If your's does it is on the side of the engine toward the bottom and probably on the left side as you sit on the mower.
which 42" Craftsman riding mower is made by Huskvarna
It depends on how long you let it run. If it is only for a couple seconds there will probably be no serious damage. If you run it for any extended period of time it will overheat the engine and lock it up and ruin the engine.
likely a bad engine.
Mower has a generator, which is turned by the engine. When engine is running, generator produces electricity to charge the storage battery.
Does all depend on what brand engine....
No, it is not safe to turn a riding lawn mower on its side as it can cause damage to the engine and potentially lead to oil or fuel leaks.
hotness

Can I do it myself, set the timing on my riding mower.
