The engine number on a motorcycle has the main function of identifying the engine. The number is also known as a VIN or Vehicle Identification number. This is a code that contains information about the producer, the model, the size of the engine and other relevant technical aspects, as well as the year the particular motorcycle engine or bike was manufactured. It also identifies the producing plant and the country the engine was produced in.

The VIN numbers are standardized according to the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration, also know as the NHTSA. The numbers, found on the right hand side of the steering head, consist of 17 characters including numbers and letters. Before 1981, motorcycle producers had their own unique methods to assign such coded identification and there was no international standard. Motorcycle engine numbers are important in order to identify bikes without license plates or documents so the owner can be traced. The number or VIN code is also important when it comes to buying and selling the vehicles, as the prospective buyer should check if the number matches the one of the identification or registration papers. The number can thus be used to check and identify the owner and any possible lien holders, such as banks or financial institutions. Buyers should check these things carefully before paying hard cash for a motorbike so as not to have a setback later because of being unaware of these things.
