The best first motorcycle is always a dirt bike. They are light and easy to handle and durable in case you lay it down. Also dirt bikes are typicaly not rode along with car traffic. You can learn to use the clutch and gear selection in an open field without being preoccupied with the traffic around you.
If this is not an option for you, get a small street bike, not a sport bike.
A Yamaha rebel, or exciter 250's.. or an old nighthawk 650 would be good.
Spend some time in a vacant large parking lot and get used to gear selection and do some figure 8's and some quick stop practice.
You might have to be dorky about your bike/riding for just a little while. but it can save your hide to take the baby steps before hitting the superslab. Also, take a motorcycle training course. Well worth the money. Even veteran motorcycleists learn things from these classes, and the classes are fun.
