According to author Jay Webster, (taken from his book entitled "Outdoor Power Equipment") blade tip speed is calculated by the following formula.

a x b x .262

Where a = Engine PTO (power take off) RPM (WOT, wide-open throttle - with no load)

Where b = Blade length (measured tip-to-tip DIAGONALLY)

Process:

1. Verify your peak PTO RPM with a tachometer, (Tiny Tach or shop type).

2. Measure blade length in inches - (to 10th" resolution).

3. Results are expressed in FPM (feet per minute) unit.

This is the distance of which the blade tip rotates in 1 minute.

The industry maximum FPM regarded to be "safe" is 19,000 FPM.
