A 2-stroke motor is an overall good type of motor. It is quicker on acceleration than a 4-stroke motor, but requires premix (gas & oil) versus straight gas for the 4 stroke. The 2-stroke motor will emit smoke from the premix lubrication whereas the 4 stroke will not smoke.

Each time the piston rises and falls it turns the crankshaft that is responsible for turning the wheels. This is how fuel is converted into forward motion.

The 4 stroke motor utilizes: Intake, Compression, Combustion and Exhaust. The spark plug only fires once every other revolution. A camshaft must alternately tip a rocker arm attached either to the intake or exhaust valve. The rocker arm returns to its closed position via a spring. The valves must be seated properly in the cylinder head to avoid compression leaks.

The 2 stroke has Intake and Exhaust. On the downward stroke it creates suction that draws in new air/fuel through an inlet located lower in the chamber. As the piston rises again, it blocks off the inlet and port, compressing the gasses at the top of the chamber. The spark plug fires and the process starts over. Basically, the engine fires on every revolution, giving the two stroke its power advantage.

What is the difference between a 2-stroke dirt bike and a 4-stroke dirt bike?

It's how the engines work. for the same amount of power, a 2-stroke will be lighter, smaller and rev higher. It'll also use more fuel and pollute more. A 4-stroke will run cleaner and more efficiently. It'll make more torque but won't rev as high.
