[Answer from an Expert: KyleKeith]

169 mph GPS Verified.

Speedo tops out at 186MPH

The speedo shows 186MPH when the bike is only going 160mph. your pushing major head wind

[Response from an Idiot]

You are an idiot and obviously know nothing about machines, speed goes on how many times the tire goes around! So wind plays no factor in speed on a motorcycle, besides making it harder to push through the air, thus more throttle to go faster. Ur answer only comes close to being right if you were referring to airplanes!

[Response from an Expert]

You've clearly never driven a bike... wind plays a huge factor in speed on a motorcycle other wise we wouldn't have wind tunnels, and bikes would be shaped like boxes because there would be no need to worry about wind resistance... your a failure at life

[Response from an Expert: KyleKeith]

The Wind is a force against the motorcycle which is moving in a forward direction. Think about it this way. You are on your motorcycle and are holding the front brake. This is a force which is stopping the bike from moving forward. The more throttle you give the more the back wheel spins thus trying to push the bike in a forward direction. The wind is less of a force than the front brake but its the same idea.

Its funny when someone calls another person an Idiot but when society views the information they provide it is without a doubt that all of us agree that they are in fact the true idiot.

[Response from Robert] The wind is a factor with top speed, but it doesn't affect the speedometer though. The speedometer is based on the number of rotations of the tires. (like when you are doing a burnout - the speedometer reads that you are moving even though you are standing still bc the wheel is moving.) Going into a headwind or tailwind only affects how much horsepower is needed to reach a certain speed thus dictating what the 110 hp of a gsx r600 can do. If the wind is with you, you need less horsepower to reach 160 bc the wind is pushing you therefore you can reach it easier than if the wind is against you pushing you back. The speedometer should read true though unluss the wheel is breaking traction.

[Response from Evan] were saying wind affects top speed, not wind affects the speedo, good description however.

Robert is talking about rpm the rotation per minute

[response from Tyler]

no Robert is not talking about the RPM's, hes talking about the wheels spinning not the motor. The speedo is based on how many times the tires are rotating. and estimates the speed... the wind is just an inhibbitor, the same way breaks are... look at it this way, drag cars use parachutes (ie wind) to slow them selves down. The bike will go faster with a tail wind, but it wont make the speedo innacurate. TH

(From Bruce in WI)

Several things vary on your bikes speedo, from the factory most bikes are off and normally reading faster then your going, thus making you THINK your going faster then you really are. 186mph is what the newer gsxr's are governed to, If you get a timing retardent module it will lift the 186 and your bike will run out as fast as the motor and gearing will allow it (saying your bike has enough power to reach this point). Tire size (diameter), front sprocket rear sprocket will all make your speedo vary, The WIND will not change your speedo from reading incorrectly, your bike may not be as fast as stated above only because of the resistance the wind is creating. Go 60mph sitting up, then tuck holding the same throttle position and watch home much speed you gain. Hopefully that will clear some confusion. --> I don't' think any of these answers .. answered the horsepower of a 08 gsxr 600. Hard to answer that seeing that its a general question for something that there is no clear answer for, can really only ball park it from one to the other
