Depends on the engine. Generally between a pint and a quart. A Briggs and Straton 8hp takes about 24oz. Kohler or TecumsehPower should be close to that as well. If you are changing the oil and the engine has a dipstick, I would put in a pint (16oz) and then check the stick. If it is still low, I would add about 2oz at a time and check again until it does read full. If it is older and does not have a dipstick, just fill it until the oil comes right to the mouth of the fill opening.
What is the capacity for 9 horsepower snow thrower
21oz.
Overfilling the oil in your snow thrower can lead to several issues, including excessive pressure in the crankcase, which may cause oil leaks or engine damage. It can also result in oil being forced into the air filter or combustion chamber, leading to poor performance and potential engine stalling. To rectify the situation, it's advisable to drain the excess oil to the recommended level before using the snow thrower. Always consult the owner's manual for specific guidelines on oil capacity and maintenance.

My 5hp MTD recommends 5-30 oil.
you do not check the oil in the engine and the engine gets too hot

Craftsman recommends using SAE 5W-30 motor oil for their snow thrower model 247.889571. It is important to follow the manufacturer's guidelines to ensure proper operation and prolong the lifespan of the equipment.
Look at the snow thrower as if you were walking behind it. About an inch or two above and to the left of where the drive speed control arm goes into the engine, there is a 3 inch pipe that comes out of the engine. On the end of that pipe is the drain plug. Make sure to tip the entire snow thrower back a bit at the end of emptying to get all the oil out.
If you are talking about the oil for the engine in a MTD snow blower, it is added to the gas in a mixture of 32 to 1 or whatever your MTD manual tells you. My 15 yr MTD snow blower takes a 32 to 1 mixture. You can buy two stroke oil at Home Depot or hardware stores and it tells you on the two stoke oil bottle( how much to add to a gallon of gas to get a 50 to 1 or 32 to 1 mixture. ___________________________________________________________________ Of course if you do the above.....it will screw up your carb...add all kinds of deposits to your valve's, piston, and spark plug (to name a few) since the MTD model 2M1 is a FOUR STROKE ENGINE! DO NOT ADD GAS MIXED WITH OIL TO THIS SNOWTHROWER! Rather...there is a yellow capped dipstick that unscrews where you can check the oil level...and add if needed.. Its on the lower side of the engine block. Make sure you are on level ground when doing this.

The amount of oil required for a 4.5 mtd (metered) mower typically depends on the specific model and manufacturer recommendations. Generally, most push mowers require about 20 to 24 ounces (approximately 0.6 to 0.7 liters) of oil for a complete fill. It's essential to check the owner's manual for precise specifications, including oil type and capacity, to ensure optimal performance.
