The recommended oil is SAE 10w 40. If the bike is use in under-10 degrees go to 5w 30 oil.

Yes, oil should be put in the crankcase on a 1989 Suzuki RM 250. The proper oil to use for this is a product made by Standard Oil called 80-90W Gear Oil.
