For a Polaris Hawkeye 300, it's recommended to use a high-quality 4-stroke engine oil with a viscosity rating of 10W-40. You can choose between conventional or synthetic oil, depending on your preference and operating conditions. It's important to ensure the oil meets the API service classification requirements specified in the owner's manual for optimal performance and engine protection. Regular oil changes are essential for maintaining the health of the engine.

I believe Polaris only made 300 4x4's with an air cooled 2 stroke, which uses injected two stroke oil. There is no oil in the crankcases. Some of the 400LC motors have a small amount of gear oil in a cavity between the recoil and crankcase for the balancer shaft. Your polaris will have a small dipstick on the right side close to the counter shaft sprocket for the transmission. The 1997 Polaris 300 4x4 Xplorer is not oil-injected; it uses a pre-mixed fuel system. This means that oil must be mixed with the gasoline manually before fueling. It is important to follow the manufacturer's specifications for the correct oil-to-gas ratio to ensure optimal engine performance and longevity.
Many Polaris 2-stroke motors have an oil injection system that varies the amount of oil required. If a user is eliminating this system, or has a unit without oil injection, the standard ratio is 50:1.
A 1999 Polaris Magnum 500 typically requires 10W-40 synthetic or petroleum-based oil for its engine. For the transmission and chaincase, Polaris recommends using their own Polaris AGL oil or an equivalent that meets the specifications. Always refer to the owner's manual for the most accurate and specific recommendations for oil types and capacities.
