if the float/needle assembly do not seat properly. the gas will slowly leak past the needle and into the cylinder-then past the rings into the oil. you probably need a carburetor rebuild.

A CJ8 Champion plug can be used with a 1974 lawn tractor that uses unleaded gas, however, it would be better to go with a hotter plug. The hotter plugs will keep the tractor running longer without needing to replace the plug sooner than expected.

It would really depend on what type you have, most often you wouldn't, but there is the odd model out there that you might have to. I would check your manual for it. If you don't have the manual, I would look up the model on the internet. Hope this helps!
I would recommend taking it to a car/tractor shop.
